IODE members were to gather in Nova Scotia for the 2021 annual meeting. Despite the cooperation of the Membertou Conference Centre where the meetings were to be held, and IODE Nova Scotia who had many plans to welcome members from across Canada, the pandemic caused the need to cancel this event. To recognize and acknowledge the patience and support received from these two groups, members had a chance at this virtual meeting to hear the guest speakers originally planned when the meeting was to be in Nova Scotia.
IODE Canada Annual Report for 2020
Reading the Officers’ reports one would never know that 2020 was a year of restrictions, challenges and confinement.
These highlights have been just a tease of the incredible work done by members and their chapters to benefit local communities throughout Canada and the provincial and national efforts that are only possible with the cooperative efforts of all chapters and IODE members. We give special thanks to each and every primary officer who combed through their chapter minutes, checking their own notes, consulted with the chapter treasurer, filled out forms and forwarded information about their chapter’s efforts to their jurisdictional counterparts. Without your time and detailed efforts the National Officers could never have compiled the pages of the IODE Canada 2021 Annual Report.
The 2020 Annual Report can be downloaded from the 121st National Annual Meeting page found in the Members Resources website.

Literacy for Citizenship
IODE Heritage Chapter, in St. Stephen, NB, launched a pilot project, Literacy for Citizenship, in a partnership with the local school board in the 2018/19 school term. The project provided a total of over 200 books suitable for reading aloud to children in grades 1 through 8 in 4 local schools. Hampers of age level specific books with tracking and assessment documents arrived in September for teachers to implement the program. The books were carefully selected to develop elementary and middle school children's understanding of good citizenship. Age appropriate messages fostered an appreciation of diversity with topics covering tolerance and inclusion without discrimination, respect for others including indigenous peoples, immigrants and refugees, integrity and courage - all concepts presented clearly with excellent and inviting illustrations - books to read, to enjoy, to talk about and remember! |
