November 28, 2007

PHD SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA STUDENT

The National Chapter of Canada IODE awarded a War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Audrey Swift. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.

Ms. Swift was born in Winnipeg. She earned her BPhE degree and her MSc at the University of Manitoba. Enrolled in her third year of an Interdisciplinary Doctorate in Psychology, Nursing and Medicine her dissertation will examine health in later life.

Her awards include a Canadian Institute of Health Research Doctoral Fellowship.

On a personal level, Ms. Swift spent five years in the Canadian Forces Reserve and attained the rank of Master Corporal in the Fort Garry Horse Regiment. She wants to formulate public health policy to benefit all Canadians.

The National Chapter of Canada IODE is proud to support this worthy student with a 2007 IODE War Memorial Scholarship.
