2007 WAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

November 28, 2007

PhD Scholarship Awarded to University of Western Ontario Student

The National Chapter of Canada IODE awarded a War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Forrest Pass. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.

Mr. Forrest Pass was born in Vancouver. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA (Honours) in 2002, and his MA from the University of Western Ontario in 2005. A doctoral candidate at UWO, his dissertation centres on nationalism and regionalism in British Columbia.

He will examine archival and published sources, including the records of organizations such as the Canadian Club and IODE. His awards include a two year Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship and the George M. Wrong Scholarship in Modern History.

Mr. Pass has a strong, passionate commitment to the teaching of Canadian history as a way of fostering a better appreciation of Citizenship.

The National Chapter of Canada IODE is proud to support this worthy student with a 2007 IODE War Memorial Scholarship.
