PhD Scholarship Awarded to University of British Columbia Student Graham Robert Scott

IODE Canada has awarded an IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Graham Robert Scott. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.

Born in Kingston, Onatrio, Mr. Scott earned a BSc at McMaster University in 2002 and a MSc at the University of British Columbia in 2004, where his MSc garnered him the Governor General’s Gold Medal for highest standing in the graduating MSc class. Enrolled in the Zoology Department at the University of British Columbia and studying Biological Science, he will focus on the age-old biological question how birds fly over the highest mountains in the world, where oxygen is so depleted, humans can barely function and address many fundamental question in biology and respiratory medicine.

Graham has won many prestigious awards, fellowships, and scholarships. Included are a Graduate Scholarship, two Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Undergraduate and Post Graduate awards. Based on this, NSERC invited him to represent Canada as a delegate to the 55th Conference of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany.

He has written fifteen publications, ten of which he is credited as first author Peer-Reviewed Research Publications, four published commentaries and several conference presentations to his credit and has given interviews on CBS’s Science feature program, Quirks and Quarks.

Graham volunteers as a mentor for undergraduate students giving advice and guidance, and is involved extensively in the Zoology Graduate Student Association. His referees agree that he is an excellent scholar and communicator, and predict he will become a leading figure nationally and internationally in life sciences research in Canada.
