2008 IODE WAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

PhD Scholarship Awarded to University of British Columbia Student, Iain Caldwell
IODE Canada has awarded an IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Iain Caldwell. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.
Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Mr. Caldwell earned an Honours BSc at Mount Allison University in 2001, MSc at Dalhousie University/NSAC 2003 and is currently in his third year of his PhD at the University of British Columbia where his thesis centres on Environmental Sciences, using the movement of seahorses and the navigation of freshwater turtles to provide perspective on environmental change.
Iain was on the Dean’s Honour List, Mount Allison, and was the recipient of two Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Awards, the Governor General’s Gold Medal at Nova Scotia’s Agricultural College plus several other awards and prizes. He has authored several publications, one accepted for publication in Sydowia (an international peer-reviewed journal focusing on mycology) and another in the Canadian Journal of Zoology.
He has volunteered consistently mentoring school and university students, organized symposiums on conservation and marine biology, participated in sports teams while leading the Zoology Graduate Student Society.
Iain hopes that his continuing biological research will lead to a more sustainable environment and thus improve the quality of life for future generations of Canadians.
