PhD Scholarship Awarded to University of British Columbia Student Michael Joseph Windover

IODE Canada has awarded an IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Michael Joseph Windover. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.

Born in Sarnia, Ontario, Mr. Windover earned a BA Honours, Visual and Liberal Arts, at the University of Western Ontario in 2003 and a MA Art History, Visual Art and Theory at Western University in 2005. Hel is now studying for a PhD at the University of British Columbia in the same field where he will re-exam the development and reach of the Art Deco style of architecture and its influence on Canadian culture.

Michael has won many prizes, awards and graduate scholarships, and was consistently on the Dean’s Honour List. A prestigious Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHERC) Award, a nomination for the Governor General’s Gold Medal Award in 2005, the Martin Eli Weil Prize for the best published essay (2007) are among his many honours.

Michael has participated in many symposiums, conferences and public lectures and has authored several scholarly publications on Art History Architectural themes.

Highly acclaimed by his referees as a truly outstanding scholar, Michael hopes to teach “humanities” in Canada so that Canadians can better understand the importance of the history and power of architectural styles, as sustainable solutions are sought to our current ecological crisis.
