Sergeant Brian Roger Brewer, Dauphin, Manitoba wins THE NATIONAL CHAPTER OF CANADA IODE (RCMP) POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS AWARD
IODE Canada was honoured to present The National Chapter of Canada IODE (RCMP) Police Community Relations Award to Sergeant Brian Brewer of Dauphin, Manitoba, in recognition of his exemplary public service to his community outside of his official duties.
Sergeant Brewer is very active with youth in the City of Dauphin, particularly at the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School (DRCSS) where he coaches the Senior Girl’s Basketball team. Prior to that, he coached basketball at Mackenzie Middle School for two years and the Junior Boy’s Basketball for one year. Sergeant Brewer gives freely of his time as practices are two to three times per week with tournaments on weekends. In addition to his coaching, Sergeant Brewer also referees school basketball. During this time, he has been a positive influence on students that have been involved with the basketball program.
Sergeant Brewer also coaches and fundraises for the Dauphin Basketball Club, a community-based program. The youth participate in a tournament in Winnipeg organized by the Manitoba Basketball Association annually and Sergeant Brewer takes the initiative to organize fundraising events in order to finance the trip.
Once basketball season is over, Sergeant Brewer is a coach and mentor of youth in the spring and fall soccer leagues. These are programs organized by the City of Dauphin. He has been involved with this youth initiative for the past five years and will be participating in it in the upcoming season.
Sergeant Brewer referees school football for the past four years and was involved with minor hockey from 2000 to 2005.
Sergeant Brewer is the local area coordinator for “Operation Christmas Child” a program organized by Samaritan's Purse. The purpose of this program is to collect and distribute gift boxes to boys and girls in various countries.
While at work, Sergeant Brewer has made his involvement in the schools a priority. He has been directly involved with the Safe Grad program as well as being a liaison officer for a couple of the schools in Dauphin for the past seven years and is presently the liaison officer for the DRCSS. Sergeant Brewer is well liked and respected by many of the youth in this community.
