Corporal John James, RCMP Headquarters, Ottawa, has won the prestigious IODE Canada RCMP Community Service Award presented to an individual or detachment that demonstrates tireless, exemplary off-duty volunteerism. Corporal James, originally from Toronto, is being recognized for his work with youth at-risk, immigrant youth and individuals struggling with mental health issues. Corporal James has served the RCMP since 1996 from coast to coast to coast.
His list of volunteer experience began in university when he coached children’s softball. He volunteered as a Call Agent at a distress centre, acted as a Big Brother and tutored adults to promote literacy. Since 2003, Corporal James has been a volunteer in the RCMP Member Employ Assistance Program (MEAP) that assists colleagues experiencing personal and professional issues through peer counseling. In this role, he has been appreciated for his leadership, interpersonal skills and has been respected for his integrity. Since commencing his Ottawa posting he has offered countless hours of off-duty volunteering. He has served on many Boards including the Pinecrest Queensway Community Health Centre, the Canadian Mental Health Association and Pathways to Education. Currently, he is serving as Vice Chair of the Pinecrest Queensway Community Health Centre, which is a community based, multi service health centre addressing issues such as housing, mental health and employment for children and youth. It is evident that Corporal James is sensitive to the troubles of immigrant youth, mental health issues and those marginalized by poverty. John has taken positive actions to bring about change in their lives. He is an inspiring tutor and excellent role model who promotes the importance of believing in yourself, your community and striving for success. Accompanying the framed certificates, one for the recipient and one for the detachment office, is an IODE gift of $1,000 for Corporal James to use to further his community service with Pathways to Education.
Chief Superintendent Jennifer Strachan and IODE Canada National President E. Anne Mason presented the award to Corporal John James on Friday morning, 30 May 2014, during the IODE National Annual business meeting held in London, ON.
