Midnight Workouts - Heather directly contributed to the development of the Fitness Squad which saw RCMP Officers attend local schools to provide healthy workouts to students, create relationships and engage with youth at risk. Due to the success of this initiative. Heather was solicited by the Ndllo School to take part in workouts under the midnight sun. Heather’s commitment positively impacted other RCMP employees, who also attended. Children and teens took part in workout routines outside. This event was widely covered by local media.
Constable Heather is well known for her involvement in schools and community outreach programs. She is often seen with her children participating in community events and proudly promotes her role as an RCMP officer in an isolated post, contributing to the tight knit community fabric experience up north. She embodies the term “Community Spirit”. She is also very active in the indigenous communities of Dettah and Ndllo. She recently presented an initiative to strengthen the community’s trust with a strategy that is seeing RCMP officers spending more time in the community on a weekly basis by attending well-ness centres to engage community members and discuss issues and concerns. This program supports the reconciliation efforts of the RCMP with our indigenous communities and has been very well received by the Yellowknife Dene Chiefs.
The list of Heather’s other community activities, in addition to the above, is lengthy. Briefly, she has is also involved with: MS Walk; Sister In Spirit Vigil; National Victim of Crime Week; Women In Leadership; Yellowknife Detachment Open House; Peer-to-Peer Advisors; Henry Larsen All-Rank Mess; and the Divisional Mental Health Strategy.
For on-going and extensive commitment to excellence, community engagement and her desire to be a community leader and contribute to the quality of life for all residents, Constable Heather Louise Cosenzo is awarded the 2020 IODE Canada RCMP Community Service Award.
