PhD Scholarship Awarded to Ontario Student
The National Chapter of Canada IODE awarded a War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship to candidate Michael Salvatore Valente. IODE initiated this award in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or who were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Today, applicants are judged on academic excellence and potential. They must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth University. Scholarships are valued at $15,000.
Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Mr. Valente earned a BCom (Honours) Sports Administration degree at Laurentian University. In 2002, he received an MBA from Wilfred Laurier University. He was a venue and operations manager for the Sydney Olympics Organizing Committee. At York University, his doctoral studies in Strategic Management Policy, look at the processes used by private corporations to employ sustainability as a strategy.
A role model to many, Mr. Valente volunteers weekly with children awaiting major organ transplants and is a Big Brother.
The National Chapter of Canada IODE is proud to award this worthy student, the 2006– 2007 IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarship.
