SNACK PACK
IODE started breakfast programs in Labrador in 1978. School children in Davis Inlet and Northwest River received a daily nutritious mid-morning snack, including milk, to supplement their scanty diet. It was recognized that an inadequate diet limits the ability to learn.
Building on the success of this pilot project, Snack Pack was launched in 1980 to provide milk, cookies and juice to 850 students in Black Tickle, Davis Inlet, Happy Valley, Hopedale, Makkovik, Nain, and Northwest River.
Today 2,016 Labrador children in 14 coastal communities enjoy Snack Pack. The grocery bill for 2006-2007 was $23,679 for 2008-2009. Items now shipped include milk, juice, crackers, peanut butter, cheese spread and for some schools cereal, jam and apples.
IODE Canada is proud of this Service program funded by primary chapters across Canada and individual donors. Snack Pack is successful thanks to the enthusiastic cooperation of teachers and parents who prepare and serve the daily snack.
One teacher wrote, "This program is of great value. With stomachs that no longer ache with hunger, the children are much better able to learn and therefore, develop skills that hopefully will help to improve their lot in this world."
Be a Friend of IODE Snack Pack is a project whereby individuals may donate the cost of the Snack Pack for one child for one year for $25. Your gift, whether to honour someone, celebrate a special occasion or provide a memorial, will help a hungry child.
