2020 is a year of celebration for IODE Alberta! Over the 12 months, members honoured 100 years of service in the province.
To mark the occasion and further our ongoing commitment to children in the province IODE Alberta raised $100,000 to support the healing journey for children at risk across Alberta. Building on a long-standing partnership with the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) to provide effective interventions for children who have lived with violence in their lives, The Healing Brain: Supporting Resilience and Hope ACWS Children’s Curriculum, is grounded in the neuroscience of trauma, brain development, and the impact of toxic stress on children. The $100,000 would continue to fund education programs for staff, volunteers and professionals who serve shelters as well as associated child and family serving agencies. The funds will also facilitate formalized on-line courses. Research shows that one caring adult can have a profound impact on healthy development mitigating the harms done to children. |
Family violence has a profound impact on children. It can be particularly harmful for preschool children, as this is when substantial brain growth and development occurs. The proportion of women in shelters with children has been increasing over the last decade at alarming rates. For more than 73 years, IODE Alberta has supported family violence and abuse prevention programs in Alberta and will continue to do so.
To end family violence and abuse starts with us. Any donation to our efforts will make a difference. Donations over $20 are eligible to receive an official income tax receipt. To support this project, cheques and money orders may be mailed to:

IODE Nova Scotia
IODE Nova Scotia had two centennial projects. The first is very current in this time of climate change. One hundred native red spruce trees will be planted across the province with the help of youth groups. A plaque will accompany each sapling. Consistency and longevity underlie their second centennial project. They will support the IWK Travelling Children’s Orthopedic Clinic which will reach children across Nova Scotia. A beautiful Maritime quilt is being prepared to be raffled at the May combined National and Provincial annual meeting. The never before available patterns, based on Queen Mary’s Carpet, for quilt blocks and rug hooking raffle tickets were sold. The IODE Corporate logo flag flow over city hall during the annual meeting. |
