I am very honoured to be the 42nd President of IODE Canada and humbly follow in the footsteps of so many remarkable women, our Past National Presidents.
Deborah Tannen, a respected linguistics scholar, said “Each person's life is lived as a series of conversations. For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships.” Imagine the year 1900 when our Founder, Margaret Poulson Murray, had a dream. Despite the limited technology of the time, she worked diligently to establish connections with mayors and other society contacts to form an affiliation of women across Canada whose core value was to help others.
One hundred and eleven years later, her dream, IODE, is still a reality.
Society has changed significantly since 1900. Today, women are trying to balance family life, work and school, leaving little personal time for other commitments. The result is declining membership in most volunteer organizations; IODE is no exception. However, I am very optimistic that together we can make new connections across Canada in order to grow our membership, the key to our future.
Tell the IODE story to everyone you meet, and the story is that IODE members have a lot of fun, make lifelong friends, while making a difference in their home towns.
Did you know that in one year, 2010, IODE members donated more than $1.8 million to local community service projects, invested $550,000 in the education of young Canadians and volunteered 975,000 hours to better the lives of those in need in our country?
We need to shout that IODE women are dedicated to making a difference in Canada and we do make a difference! It is my wish to visit as many chapters as I can across Canada, to encourage our membership to reach out, make connections within their communities and ask women to join IODE. I want to bring a message of strength and encouragement that we can grow our membership with thought and planning, so that IODE will continue on for another 111 years!
Author, J.K. Rowling, stated that:" It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities". I love the choice I made to join IODE. My IODE journey of 23 years has offered me so much – personal growth, the knowledge that one person can make a difference, and the warmth and friendship of the women that I have met and connected with.
I particularly invite any woman who, after reviewing our website, wishes to join IODE, perhaps even to start a new chapter in her community, to please contact our head office for further information. I am passionate and committed to IODE Canada. We are a great group of women! We work together to make a difference in our communities, and we have been doing amazing work for 111 years! Please choose to join me on this journey to Grow our Membership by Making Connections … The Key to our Future
