“On Thursday, 18 April, I drove to the J.W. Marriott Lake Rosseau Hotel and Spa in the heart of Muskoka country for the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Provincial Chapter of Ontario.
At the invitation of IODE Ontario President, Karen Barker, I attended a meeting of the Provincial Executive Committee held the morning of Friday, 19 April, where I was honoured to be elected to the PEC for the term 2013-2014.
Following a delicious buffet at the All Members’ Luncheon, Sonya Sherwood, guest speaker from PricewaterhouseCoopers, spoke on ‘Volunteering and You’. She stressed that being passionate about a cause is the most important part of volunteering. Time to volunteer will be found if one is passionate about one’s choice.
That afternoon, I attended two of four workshops offered: The Accounting Game and How to Build a Chapter Website. I am positive that members who participated in the Not-for-Profit Corporation Act and Basic Computer Skills workshops benefited from the information presented. Following an All Members’ Dinner that evening, four art classes were offered: Spirit Painting, Watercolour Journaling, Print Making, and Soapstone Carving Mullets. These classes brought out the creative side of members as they made one-of-a-kind keepsakes. Everyone who participated thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Saturday morning, the 93rd Provincial Annual Meeting with the theme Stronger as One commenced with a procession of the Canadian standard and Officers, led by Piper Marilyn Willis. Traditional opening ceremonies, Resolutions of Loyalty to Her Majesty the Queen and the Governor General of Canada, and presentation of annual reports followed.
I appreciated the opportunity to celebrate the chapter’s 93 year history and to bring greetings from IODE Canada. The 2012 Membership Award was won by IODE Laurentian, Ottawa, and the Municipal Membership Award was won by IODE Ottawa. It was a great pleasure to meet and honour the 36th IODE Ontario Provincial Police Community Relations Award winner, Constable Richard T. Cahdila, and to meet his wife, Natalie. The Officers who held plenary sessions in Services, Fundraising/Communications and Education during the afternoon session brought insightful new information to the members. A baby shower garnered numerous, beautiful items to support the provincial services work. One member, Gwyneth Harkin of Ottawa, knit 93 baby toques in honour of IODE Ontario’s 93 year history.
It was an honour and privilege to install the Officer group for the term 2013-2014. I wished Karen and the Officer group much success in the term ahead as they focus on creating the Momentum required to form new chapters and welcome women into IODE.
President, Karen, held a reception following the annual meeting, which gave members the opportunity to sit and relax in the ‘Living Room’ of the hotel. I thank the National Executive Committee for approving my visit to the 93rd Annual Meeting of IODE Ontario. I had a wonderful time.”
