This month, IODE officers in primary chapters across Canada are reflecting on 2011 as they write their annual reports which will later be compiled into one body of work, the 2011 National Chapter of Canada IODE Annual Report. I look forward to reading these reports because they are so diverse and interesting, while providing detailed information on the value of IODE volunteer work in the areas of community service, education and citizenship.
When IODE was incorporated in 1917, one of the objectives of the Corporation was to “promote education of all kinds”. IODE chapters continue to consider educational assistance to students an important aspect of their fundraising efforts. They brighten the future for many students who carry a financial burden in order to further their post-secondary education. When bursaries, scholarships and funds to assist with the cost of textbooks are offered, the stress of this burden is lightened.
Since 1920, IODE Canada has been offering War Memorial Scholarships for study in a doctoral program. We continue a thirty-year tradition of offering IODE Labrador Bursaries to assist students with their post-secondary education.
This year, IODE Canada will honour our Patron’s 60th Anniversary as our reigning Monarch by presenting a one-time $25,000 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee War Memorial Scholarship to an outstanding student for study in a PhD program in Canada or within the Commonwealth.
I look forward to learning the name of the winner of this one-time scholarship and the names of the five, $15,000 War Memorial Scholarship winners, to be announced at the 112th National Annual Meeting of IODE Canada on 26 May 2012 in Toronto. At this meeting, we will also be presenting the IODE (RCMP) Community Relations Award and announcing the winner of The National Chapter of Canada IODE Violet Downey Book Award in Canadian children’s literature.
As I look to the future of IODE, my vision is that of continued growth in our membership as we carry on our tradition of assisting students with their education and contributing to Canada with our volunteer service.
I invite women of all ages to join our organization and begin a very special, happy New Year in IODE.
IODE Canada National President
