Making Connections … The Key to the Future

For 112 years, IODE Canada members have used their volunteer time and talents in their communities to create a better Canada. Members from across Canada convened for the 112th Annual Meeting on Saturday, 26 May, at the Delta Toronto Airport West Hotel, Mississauga, Ontario.

At the opening of this one day corporate annual meeting on Saturday morning, National President Ann Dyer welcomed IODE delegates and guests to the Annual Meeting at which annual reports were presented and approved. 

Greetings from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, David Johnston, His Excellency the Governor General of Canada, David C. Onley, The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Dalton McGuinty, The Premier of Ontario were received and read.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson in attendance to announce the winner of The National Chapter of Canada IODE (RCMP) Police Community Relations  Award, presented to Corporal Giovanna Taddeo of Nunavik in recognition of exemplary community service  outside official duties.  Following the presentation of the  award, Commissioner Paulson assisted Past National President Sandra Connery with the presentation of Diamond Jubilee Medals to thirteen IODE members present at the meeting in recognition of their volunteer service in Canada.

The IODE Violet Downey Book Award winner for 2012 was author Janet McNaughton, for the second time, for Dragon Seer’s Gift. This is the  28th year that the award has been made available to Canadian authors.

The six  winning scholars from applications across Canada of the IODE War Memorial Doctoral Scholarships for the academic year 2012 - 2013 were announced.

Peter John  Gill, of Albeberta studying Medicine/Primary Care at Oxford University, United Kingdom, is the winner of the IODE War Memorial Queen Elizabeth  II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship of $25,000.

The five $15,000 scholarship winners are;
        Brian Booth, studying Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, BC
        Anna Hargreaves, studying  Biology at Queen’s University, ON
        Laura Paret, studying Child Clinical Psychology at University of Guelph, ON
        Sean  Richmond, studying International Law at University of Oxford, UK
        Amrita  Roy, studying Population and Public Health at University of Calgary, AB

The National meeting continued after lunch with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee War Memorial Scholar, Peter John Gill as guest speaker, followed by Joyce McGuiney, Lawyer, presenting the implementation and consideration of the Not-for-Profit Charities Act.  President Ann Dyer gave 60 year membership pins  to Addie Manning, Evelyn Mitchell and Eileen Motton, thanking each recipient for  her 60 plus years of deciated service to IODE.

Chapter  Membership Awards  were presented to chapters across Canada.
Primary Chapters: the Membership Crystal Challenge Cup is awarded annually to primary chapter attaining the most new members.
    1st place IODE Cobequid, Nova Scotia
     2nd place IODE Laura  Gordon, British Columbia
     3rd place IODE Bemersyde, Ontario and IODE Jon Sigurdsson, Manitoba
 Provincial  Chapters: this award is based on the greatest percentage of new members in a  provincial chapter.
      1st place IODE British Columbia
      2nd place IODE Alberta
      3rd place IODE Nova Scotia

Following the installation of the National Officers for 2012 - 2013 by Past National President June McDonal, President Ann spoke on creating Momentum need to continue with her vision of Making Connections … The Key to the Future of IODE. 

IODE Alberta President Diane Duce extended an invitation to host the 2013 Annual Meeting in Calgary, 28 May to 01 June 2013, which concluded the annual meeting.
