IODE began breakfast programs in Labrador in 1978, providing school children in Davis Inlet and Northwest River with a daily nutritious mid-morning snack, including milk, to supplement their limited diets. It was recognized that inadequate nutrition can limit a child’s ability to learn.

Building on the success of this pilot project, the IODE Snack Pack program was launched in 1980 to provide milk, cookies, and juice to students in Black Tickle, Davis Inlet, Happy Valley, Hopedale, Makkovik, Nain, and Northwest River.
Today, more than 2,300 students in 15 schools participate in the IODE Snack Pack program, with an annual grocery bill exceeding $40,000. Items now shipped include milk, juice, crackers, peanut butter, cheese slices, and, in some schools, cereal. IODE Canada is proud of the IODE Labrador Snack Pack program, made possible through the support of primary chapters across the country and generous individual donors. Its success is thanks to the enthusiastic cooperation of teachers and parents, who prepare and serve the daily snacks to students.
