2012 IODE War Memorial Scholarship Award Winners

Picture
Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship
Peter Gill, of Edmonton, AB, is a Rhodes Scholar and recipient of many national and international awards, is the winner of the $25,000 IODE War Memorial Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship.

Peter’s application impressed the judges with both his important PhD thesis work and his contributions to paediatric medicine in rural Canada and in third world countries via the web. Peter’s doctoral research, to establish best care practices for children, has interrupted his medical studies and taken him to the University of Oxford. A new model of health care recently developed in the United Kingdom improved the quality of care for adults. A pay-for-performance system in which a portion of family doctor compensation based on indicators of quality care was developed. It has resulted in significantly improved patient health.

Peter’s research focuses on identifying and developing a number of key indicators of high quality care for children. Establishing these will enable researchers, funding agencies and policy makers to improve and deliver cost effective care.

Peter will return to Canada in 2013 to complete his medical degree at the University of Alberta and begin his career as a paediatrician as well as a clinical scientist, medical educator and advocate for children.

“Thank you kindly for selecting me as a recipient for the prestigious IODE War Memorial Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship.  I am very humbled to be selected for a scholarship from such a well recognized and important organization.”
Peter Gill
Winner of the IODE War Memorial
Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship for 2012–2013

Brian Gregory Booth

Picture
Brian Gregory Booth: from Edmonton, BSc
Computing Science, University of Alberta, PhD candidate Simon Fraser University. Brian’s research is in the field of medical imaging analysis. His research investigates the premature infants’ brain using non-invasive diffusion MRI scans to predict developmental delays due to brain injuries which occur around the time of birth. His challenge is to generate a statistical model to interpret the dMRI of a full term infant brain for comparison with the premature infant and, as well, to measure the rate of brain development, one scan to another. The Medical Image Analysis Lab at Simon Fraser is one of only two such labs in Canada that accommodate this research. Brian’s future goals include facilitating the transfer of technology of medical image analysis to the clinical setting so that technology will become a useful tool in the diagnostic process. Brian received many academic awards and is well published. Brian
is an avid long distance runner, a volunteer camp counsellor, a
fundraiser for a food bank and MS Canada and Course Marshall
at Vancouver’s International Marathon.

Anna Lesley Hargreaves

Picture
Anna Lesley Hargreaves: from Toronto, BSc Trent  University, MSc University of Calgary, presently, PhD candidate Biology, Queen’s University. Anna’s research tackles a question important to conservationists; to study the evolutionary ecology of species’ range limits. This question is timely, to help predict shifts in plant and animal life in a warming Canada. Described as a brilliant student, her research demanded impeccable experimental design, analytical skills as well as fortitude in conducting work under
challenging conditions. She has been awarded many Research Grants, Graduate Scholarships, Fellowship and Recognition Awards. She is well published including articles in Journal Ecology, the top international journal in her field. Her references agree that she is among the very best graduate student they have ever encountered. They predict Anna will become a world-class researcher in ecology, conservation and environmental biology. She finds time to volunteer as a language tutor and classroom presenter, a chess player, recreational soccer player and Salsa and Tango dancer.

Laura Adrienne Paret

Picture
Laura Adrienne Paret: from London, BSc
Psychology, Queen’s University, M.A. Clinical Psychology and currently PhD candidate, University of Guelph. Laura, a child and adolescent clinical psychologist, has focused her research on the broad area of parent-child relationship patterns and its lifetime effect on coping with stress and experiencing mental illness. Poor caregiver/parent-child interaction equates to a less adaptive biological response in the anxious child. Her research includes studying the after effects of a dysfunctional family on the next generation and how these factors influence emotional well-being over a life span.  She is the recipient of numerous scholarships and several awards for outstanding academic achievement. Her referees acclaim her as a true scientist-practitioner who applies her research and academic knowledge to her clinical work. Laura’s extra-curricular interests include playing piano, tutoring, ice skating and drafting a children’s book on family and feelings. In her future career, Laura hopes to combine her love of working with children with her passion for research and scholarship in a children’s hospital.

Sean Kevin Richmond

Picture
Sean Kevin Richmond: from Montreal, BA Politics and Philosophy, Queen’s University, MA Political Science, University of British Columbia, LL.B University of Ottawa, currently PhD candidate
International Relations, Oxford University. Sean’s research focuses on war as regulated by the UN Charter and the
Geneva Convention as they define and shape a state’s possible
course of action and the justifications made for that behaviour. He
is studying Canada and Britain’s conduct during the Korean War
and the Afghan Conflict via government documents, public statements and documented interviews. Focused on recent uses of force, he suggests that the role of international law and its influence on decision-making has changed; it is at the vanishing point of law. His many academic awards and distinctions include the Domus Prize from Linacre College, Oxford; a JP Humphrey Fellowship in Human Rights, Canadian Council on International Law; the Maxwell Cohen and Hughes Hubbard International Law and Reed LLP Prize. As a lawyer-in-training he was part of a team to report on repatriating Omar Khadr; he worked for the Legal Bureau of the Department of Foreign Affairs and he analysed transcripts from the Maher Arar inquiry. His future is in academia.

Amrita Roy

Picture
Amrita Roy: from Kingston, BSc Guelph University, MSc Epidemiology & Biostatics, UWO, PhD candidate University of Calgary, Leaders in Medicine Program. Her focus on maternal health issues in marginalized populations builds on her masters research into nutrition and psychosocial stress as predictors of prenatal depression symptoms during pregnancy. Her choice of University of Calgary allows her to focus on health issues of aboriginal women; to articulate determinates of depression and to provide intervention tools for this population. Following completion of her PhD, she has been accepted to the MD program at UofC where, after graduating with two doctoral degrees, she will focus on patient care and public health issues, in particular women’s issues within marginalized populations both in Canada and abroad. Numerous awards and scholarships have been bestowed on this worthy candidate. Outside of academia, she volunteers as a mentor for science students on a nonprofit community literacy magazine, Aamra.
