Peter John Gill, Oxford University, UK is awarded The IODE War Memorial Scholarship Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee $25,000

5/26/2012

It is with great pride that the IODE War Memorial Committee has chosen Peter John Gill to receive their highest award, The IODE War Memorial Scholarship Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee.

This one-time award commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada and Patron of IODE.

Peter Gill was born in Edmonton, AB. The University of Alberta conferred a Bachelor of Medical Science degree (BMSc) in 2009 to Peter, where he is enrolled as a medical student in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Mr Gill is currently on leave of absence after completion of three years in order to earn a Doctor of Philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, UK.

Peter has held an Overseas Travel Grant, an ASTech Foundation Leaders of Tomorrow Award, a Peter Lougheed Scholarship and a Rhodes Scholarship for three years of study at Oxford University.

His strong vision, commitment and passion is to improve children’s health care in Canada. Peter’s research focuses on the development of quality markers and standards as introduced in the UK, by their National Health Services of “payment by performance” to a portion of their family doctors. The implementation of this system has resulted in significant improvements in patients’ health. These key indicators will target health promotion, the diagnosis of acute illnesses and the care of children with chronic diseases. His research has been presented at numerous national and international conferences in Canada, Spain, Bristol and in Seattle, Washington.

Mr. Gill chose to pursue an elective in Africa to broaden his perspective of people, culture and medicine in different settings. He found time, when returning from Africa, to raise funds to send soccer equipment to the children he visited.

Peter is described by his referees as an exceptional individual with tremendous energy, outstanding ability and ambition. He is a strong team player, mentoring new PhD students, teaching undergraduates and graduate medical students, while maintaining his links to Canada. He represents over 7,800 Canadian medical students for the Canadian Medical Association and is still actively involved in PedsCases, a medical education project he co- founded to develop resources for future medical students. This paediatric open source online tool is now imbedded in paediatric curriculum across North America.

Participation in the Magdalen College cricket, rowing, football and squash clubs exemplifies Peter’s team spirit and athletic prowess. Peter has merited many outstanding accolades during his career, reflecting not only his intellect, but his impressive personal character. He has been described as “destined for greatness”, revered for humanism and his desire to become a leader in research, advocacy and education in Canada. He plans to return to Canada to complete his medical degree, to become a leader in research, advocacy and education in Canada, to improve the Canadian Health Care system and specifically, the quality of children’s care.

IODE Canada is proud to award Peter John Gill, the IODE War Memorial Scholarship Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee.
